couples counselling

Couples therapy, like individual counselling, allows for the development of insight and self-knowledge. However, couples work can also be a forum for you both to improve your understanding of each other's past hurts and/or present position, and to think about creating realistic and positive attitudes towards each other's future desires.

I offer two models of couples work.

Model One

The first is a 'traditional' model where I meet with you as a couple and we work together on your issues as a couple. It may be that we also work on some of your issues in a number of one-to-one sessions, without your partner, at various points in the process. My professional experience suggests that it can be very helpful for a couple to meet with me for an individual session each in the first instance, before coming together as a therapeutic trio.

Model Two

The second model is that each person in the couple works with a separate counsellor for a set number of sessions before coming together as a 'counselling quartet'. I am able to offer this work with a trusted associate female counsellor, Pat Mills (MBACP) accredited UKRCP registered independent counsellor.

Issues and help

Common issues couples come to therapy with include:

  • difficulties with closeness and intimacy
  • communicating with each other
  • different sexual needs
  • repetitive arguments
  • issues of trust and fidelity
  • feelings of distance or resentment
  • life stage issues within the family, e.g. a breavement, or when children are born, become teenagers or leave home.

Couples therapy can help you to:

  • listen, understand and communicate with each other in more constructive ways
  • resolve your conflicts in a safe space
  • negotiate with each other about difficult situations and decisions
  • return to a more loving and respectful relationship.
